NEW DELHI: In yet another case of rehabilitating about-to-retire civil servant, the government on Monday appointed outgoing Intelligence BureauDirector Nehchal Sandhuas the Deputy National Security Advisor with effect from March 20, 2013.

61-year-old Sandhu, a 1973 batch IPS officer of Biharcadre, is serving a two-year fixed tenure as the IB chief, which ends on December 31. But soon, he will have a three-year fixed tenure as the Deputy NSA. The post of the Deputy NSA would fall vacant only on March 20, 2013, when incumbent Vijaya Latha Reddy, an IFS officer of the 1975 batch, ends.

However, to ensure there is no hiccup in Sandhu’s appointment as the Deputy NSA and to fill the void of over two months between his retirement and the new post, the government has appointed him as an Officer on Special Duty in the National Security Council Secretariatfor the intervening period.
